Epitaph's Punk O Rama Vol 9
EPITAPH'S PUNK-O-RAMA VOL. 9 DROPS JUNE 8
24-SONG SAMPLER INCLUDES FREE DVD WITH ELEVEN MUSIC VIDEOS
Epitaph Records - home to punk legends like Bad Religion, Rancid and
Pennywise - will release PUNK-O-RAMA VOL. 9, its annual sampler on June
8th. Boasting the aforementioned acts, label favorites like Dropkick
Murphys and The Bouncing Souls, plus up-and-comers like The Matches and
Scatter the Ashes, the impressive 24-track compilation also houses a
free DVD of eleven music videos.
PUNK-O-RAMA VOL. 9 launches with "Social Suicide," a scorching extract
from The Empire Strikes First, the new, long-awaited disc by Epitaph's
flagship band, Bad Religion. Sounding as vital as ever as they lead the
charge, the band - headliners of Summer 2004's Warped Tour - clears a
path for a listen to the label's promising future.
From First To Last's passionate, expansive and gut-wrenching "Ride The
Wings of Pestilence," (lifted from its emotive debut Dear Diary, My
Teenage Angst Has A Body Count) and Scatter the Ashes' smoldering,
atmospheric "City In The Sea," (culled from Devout/The Modern Hymn) both
assure Epitaph has landed two of experimental rock's brightest hopes as
it continues diversifying its sound and image.
And with VOL. 9, the sonic shackles are clearly off. Red-tipped rock and
roll like The Matches' hook-injected, E. Von Dahl Killed The
Locals-excerpted "Sick Little Suicide" is effectively contrasted by
Atmosphere's "The Keys To Live vs. 15 Minutes of Fame."
The latter, taken from the modern hip-hop classic Seven's Travels,
asserts that PUNK-O-RAMA exceeds expectations in genre variety despite
the branding - be it Dropkick Murphys' Celtic punk shot "The Dirty
Glass" or Division of Laura Lee's garage-y stomp "Dirty Love."
From Eyedea & Abilities' street smart "Now" to Error's apocalyptic,
industrial rant "Burn In Hell" to Nekromantix' psycho-billy thumper
"Struck By A Wrecking Ball," the quality and expanding scope of the
Epitaph and Hellcat Records rosters are unrivaled.
But this is still the PUNK-O-RAMA compilation series, and recent
standout anthems from label veterans like Pennywise ("Now I Know"),
Motion City Soundtrack ("Throw Down"), Rancid ("Tropical London"),
Pulley ("Bad Reputation"), 1208 ("Fall Apart") and The Bouncing Souls
("Sing Along Forever") are the backbone of the new disc. Not to mention
The Refused's "Liberation Frequency," a revolutionary slice of skilled,
frantic hardcore grafted from the recent reissue of 1998's The Shape Of
Punk To Come.
Rarities like Hot Water Music's "Seein' Diamonds," and Death By Stereo's
previously unreleased live take on "The Plague," should tempt even the
most ardent Epitaph loyalists. Yet, the always "dirt cheap" PUNK-O-RAMA
VOL. 9 sweetens the deal by doubling up with a bonus DVD of coveted
music videos by the likes of CD fixtures The Special Goodness -
featuring Pat Wilson of Weezer - HorrorPops, The Weakerthans, Matchbook
Romance, plus Randy, Converge and many more.
